📖 First — What Is Unemployment?

Unemployment insurance is money from the government that helps you pay your bills while you look for a new job. You paid into this system every time you worked. This is YOUR money — you earned it.

✅ Do You Qualify? Check These Questions:

Not sure? Apply anyway. Let the state decide. It is free to apply and you lose nothing by trying.

🗺️ The Basic Steps — Every State

  1. Gather Your Papers
Before you start, get these ready: your Social Security Number, your employer's name and address, the dates you worked, and your last paycheck amount.
  2. Go to Your State's Website
Find your state below. Click the green button. Go to that website. Look for a button that says "File a Claim" or "Apply for Benefits."
  3. Fill Out the Form Online
Answer the questions honestly. It takes about 30–45 minutes. When you finish, write down your confirmation number — keep it safe.
  4. Check In Every Week
After you apply, you must check in every week (called "certifying"). This tells the state you are still looking for work. If you skip a week, you lose that week's money.
  5. Keep Looking for Work
While you receive benefits, you must apply for jobs every week. Keep a list of every job you apply for — the date, the company name, and how you applied. Your state may ask to see this list.
IMPORTANT: File as soon as possible after losing your job. Most states will not pay you for weeks that have already passed. Every week you wait is money you may never get back.

Type your state name to jump straight to your instructions.

✅ Can I Get Maryland Unemployment?
  • You lost your job and it was NOT your fault (laid off, company closed, hours cut).
  • You worked in Maryland and earned at least $900 in your highest paid quarter last year.
  • You are able to work and are actively looking for a new job.
  • You are available to work — meaning you can start a new job if offered one.
  • You quit for no good reason — you will likely be denied.
  • You were fired for doing something wrong on purpose — you will likely be denied.
📋 What to Have Ready Before You Start
1
Your Social Security Number (SSN)
2
Your Maryland driver's license or ID
3
Your employer's full name and address
4
The date you started and the date you stopped working
5
How much you were paid (your last paycheck)
6
Why you lost your job (in your own words)
7
Your bank account number and routing number (for direct deposit)
📝 How to File — Step by Step
  1. Go to the Maryland website
Open your internet browser. Type this address: beacon.labor.maryland.gov — press Enter. You will see the Maryland unemployment website.
  2. Create your account
Click the button that says "Create Account." Enter your email address and create a password. Write your password down somewhere safe.
  3. Click "File a New Claim"
After you log in, look for the button that says "File a New Claim." Click it. The website will ask you questions — answer them honestly one at a time.
  4. Fill in your information
You will be asked: your name, address, Social Security Number, your employer's name and address, your start and end dates, and why you lost your job.
  5. Submit and write down your number
Click "Submit." A confirmation number will appear on the screen. Write this number down right now. You will need it later.
  6. Check in every week
Every week, go back to beacon.labor.maryland.gov and click "File Weekly Certification." This tells Maryland you are still looking for work. Do this EVERY week or you will not get paid.
  7. Apply for jobs every week
Maryland requires you to apply for at least 3 jobs every week. Keep a list — write down the company name, date, and how you applied. Maryland may ask to see this list.
⚠️ Big Warning for Maryland:

If you skip your weekly check-in, you lose that week's money FOREVER. Set a reminder on your phone every week.

Also — if you do any work at all and earn money, you MUST report it. Even if it's just a few hours. Not reporting it is fraud and you could have to pay all the money back.
